Adventuring into the Crowsnest Pass region offers a breathtaking and memorable journey through the Canadian Rockies. Located in southwestern Alberta, this area is renowned for its diverse terrain, beautiful landscapes and awe-inspiring panoramic views. From snow-capped mountains with towering peaks and alpine lakes, this is heaven on earth for any avid hiking enthusiast and adventure seeker. This area offers trails that cater to all levels of hikers from scenic walks to challenging ascents.
If you have ever thought about venturing into the wilderness on an epic backpacking trip but do not know where to start, Uplift Adventures, based in Crowsnest Pass and Waterton Lakes National Park, has you covered. Their Intro Into Backpacking course will teach you everything you need to know including how to survive in the backcountry.
I participated in the Intro Into Backpacking course and the it started with online seminars to help me pack and prepare. Before leaving for our backpacking course, proper preparation was essential. The seminars taught me to how to check mountain-specific weather forecasts and what was noteworthy in the forecasts, fire bans, trail conditions, the essential gear to bring, and more. The weather in the Rockies can be unpredictable and may change in a heartbeat, so preparation and education are important parts to trip planning when venturing into the backcountry.
From Meet-and-Greet to Mountain Peaks: Our Hiking Adventure
The evening before the trip, we were invited to an introduction meet-and-greet. During this meet, we met our guides: all multi-day backpacking guides with Uplift Adventures are certified with the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides. Our trip guides were not only personable but very knowledgeable. At the meet, we were also able to pick up rental gear, go over the safety and details of our trip, and ask any questions prior to starting our adventure. The following day, the team met at the trail head, where food and cooking equipment was divided and gear was checked one last time.
The hike started off on a rocky double-tracked trail, and after a couple of river crossings, we were soon rewarded with a view of an epic old mine which ceased operation in 1983. The guides gave us several mini breaks along the way to give our bodies lots of rest. After 5 kilometres of trekking, we stopped for a beautiful and scenic lunch at the first lake. The water was crystal clear and the birds were singing. As we were sitting amongst the tall grass and wildflowers, the conversations were flowing and stories were told. After lunch, the climb started. The sun was hot and shining bright, but nothing was holding our team back. Hydrate, rest, repeat!
Our guides advised us of the importance of staying on designated trails, not only to protect the environment, but also to ensure our safety by minimizing risks associated with unfamiliar terrain. We stuck together and helped each other to the campsite.
Shortly after arriving at camp, we picked our camping spot for the night. Hidden in the trees with a close view of the mountains still with snow accumulated on them, this was the perfect cozy spot for a good night’s rest. After the camp setup, the guides taught us how to do a bear hang, far away from the campsite. While Crowsnest Pass is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, it is essential to respect its rugged terrain and wildlife. Bears and other wildlife inhabit the area, requiring hikers to carry bear spray, make noise on the trail, and properly store food.
After the bear hang, we were shown how to use the cooking supplies provided to cook our supper. With a full belly and after a long day of adventuring, we all decided it was time for bed. Camping under starlit skies in this remote wilderness area was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all of us.
We woke up around 7 a.m. and the descent back to the cars started shortly after breakfast. We enjoyed fruit and granola with the morning sun by the lakeside while sipping on hot coffee. We ensured the campsite was clean and tidy before our departure and wanted to be consistent with leave-no-trace practices. As we packed up, this overwhelming feeling of love for nature came over us.
