Overview
A karst is a landscape predominantly derived from limestone and has been eroded over thousands of years to produce fissures, sinkholes, caves, and more. The karst backpacking trip takes you on a journey of exploration of moon-like landscapes. After a scenic day of backpacking, you will reach camp and want to immediately explore this awe-inspiring area. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife because it is common to see mountain goats and sheep watching you from the alpine mountain slopes.
This backpacking trip can be done two different ways for private trips. You can do this as a 3-day backpack and have a basecamp at a junction point to the valleys. This will allow you to explore two valleys over three days, or book onto a 2-day trip staying high in the mountain environment.
This backpacking trip is designed for an intermediate to advanced backpacker.
Highlights:
Viewing karst landscapes and exploring a cave
High potential of seeing alpine wildlife such as goats and sheep
Expert knowledge from our locals guides
River crossings
True backcountry experience
Itinerary
Total Trip Stats:
2 Day Trip: Distance: 18km, 992m +/- elevation, + walk around camp
3 Day Trip: Distance: 18km, 992m +/- elevation, + day hike up to another 10km + 500m +/- elevation
Tentative Trip Itinerary:
This trip goes in and out on the same trail.
** On the 3 Day Trip: Day 2 below is Day 3. The second day on this trip will include a day hike up to 10km with 500m elevation in some more challenging terrain. We will visit cave entrances and unique landscapes. **
Day 1
8AM: Meet in Crowsnest Pass at the designated location discussed during the pre-trip meeting.
8AM – 8:30AM: Travel to trailhead.
8:30AM – 2PM:
You’ll quickly leave the frontcountry behind and step into the wild heart of Castle Parks. Early on, you’ll truly feel the remoteness as this route includes several unbridged creek crossings that add a little adventure (and a lot of fun) to the journey. Be sure to pack sturdy water shoes for this trip—flip-flops won’t cut it!
As you hike with your group, you’ll wander through a breathtaking mountain valley, tracing the path of a crystal-clear creek toward the high country. We typically have lunch as a mountain vista overlooking our destination. The landscape gradually shifts as you approach a rugged talus slope, and keep your ears open for the cheerful squeaks of pikas as you make your final ascent into camp.
After setting up your tents and enjoying a well-earned dinner, the evening is yours to explore. A small cave nearby invites a bit of curiosity, and the surrounding alpine terrain offers plenty to wander and discover before settling in under the mountain sky.
Distance: 9 km
Elevation: 820 m+, 172m -
Day 2
7AM: Wake up. Take down your tent and pack your backpack.
8AM - 9AM: Breakfast and pack up camp.
10AM – 2PM
If we don’t explore the cave in the evening, we’ll venture into it the next morning before packing up camp. Start your day with spectacular views and soak in the raw beauty of the Canadian Rockies as the light spills across the peaks.
Your hike out follows the same trail, but with a new perspective. You’ll notice details you may have missed on the way in. Along the way, we have the option of going for a quick swim. There’s also the option to detour onto a side trail that leads to a hidden waterfall, well worth the extra steps.
And yes, those creek crossings will be waiting for you again… just to keep the adventure going.
