"I had a wonderful weekend adventure with Uplift Adventures! I highly recommend this service to anyone heading out to the south Canadian Rockies and looking for a little fun and guidance to spice up your trip. Whether you're experienced or not, the team will make you feel comfortable and will not fail to make you smile..."
Overview
The alpenglow is the light off of the mountains either at sunset or sunrise that gives the landscape the most beautiful colour. In the South Canadian Rockies, there are natural red hues in the mountain rock, which showcase the best alpenglow. This backpacking trip will take you deep into the wilderness near Waterton Lakes National Park to two subalpine lakes. Wake up early to watch the sunrise hit the mountain headwall and illuminate the start of your day.
This backpacking trip can be done two different ways for private trips. Add some relaxation and camp at the alpine lakes for two nights and make this a three-day trip. Have some extra time to just relax and do short day trips from your basecamp. Or stick to this option and experience the beautiful alpenglow yourself over two days.
This backpack is designed for an intermediate backpacker.
Highlights:
Remote alpine lake with stunning views
Red hues during alpenglow

Itinerary
Total Trip Stats:
Distance: 23 km, 825m +/- elevation
Tentative Trip Itinerary:
This trip goes in and out on slightly different trails.
Day 1
8AM: Meet in Beaver Mines at the designated location discussed during the pre-trip meeting. A high clearance vehicle is recommended to reach the trailhead. If you don’t have one, you will likely be able to jump in a vehicle with someone else before we reach the difficult section of the backcountry road. Please ensure you discuss this at the pre-trip meeting.
8AM – 9AM: Travel to the trailhead.
9AM – 4PM: Step into the stunning landscape of Castle Parks. Early on, you’ll cross an unbridged creek, a true backcountry experience that sets the tone for the day. As you hike deeper into the valley, you’ll follow a crystal-clear creek winding through towering peaks and lush subalpine terrain.
Your destination? A spectacular alpine lake tucked beneath dramatic mountain headwalls.
As evening settles in, watch the mountains ignite with alpenglow, a golden light spilling across the cliffs in a moment that feels almost unreal. Spend your evening relaxing around camp, the lake, or in your tent.

Day 2
7AM: Wake up. Take down your tent and pack your backpack.
Choose your own morning adventure:
-
Rise early to catch a breathtaking sunrise over the lake, or
-
Sleep in while your guide prepares a hearty breakfast and fresh coffee.
Take time to relax, soak in the scenery, and savor the last moments of wilderness before packing up camp.
8AM - 10AM: Breakfast and pack up camp.
10AM – 2PM: Hike out via a slightly different trail, offering new perspectives and forest beauty. Enjoy the final stretches of mountain views as you make your way back to the trailhead. This stretch of the trail is less travelled and may require hiking over fallen trees and through overgrown trails.
