Overview
A cirque is a dramatic, bowl-shaped mountain basin carved by ancient glaciers. Formed over thousands of years, a cirque begins as a small hollow where snow accumulates. As that snow compacts into ice and slowly moves downhill, it grinds and sculpts the surrounding rock. Over time, this powerful natural process carves out a steep-walled, amphitheatre-like depression with a rounded basin at its base. Your first night will be spent in an awe-inspiring cirque. Then this trip is partially named "The Cirque" because you will see some of the most spectacular views while making a circle around tall mountains.
This backpacking trip is intermediate to advanced. The trip lengths are designed to allow time for relaxation at camp. There are some steeper sections along the trail that are challenging.
Highlights:
Remote alpine lake with stunning views
National Park vibes without being in a National Park
Expert knowledge from our locals guides

Some of the best views in the Canadian Rockies
Itinerary
Total Trip Stats:
Distance: 33 km, 1,605 m+ elevation, 1,680 m- elevation
Tentative Trip Itinerary:
This trip is a loop, but you will start and stop in a slightly different location. This is just to avoid some road walking. You will need to do a short vehicle shuttle on the first and last day.
Day 1
8AM: Meet in Crowsnest Pass at the designated location discussed during the pre-trip meeting. A high clearance vehicle is recommended, but not required. You will be driving gravel roads. If you don’t have one, you will likely be able to jump in a vehicle with someone else before we reach the difficult section of the backcountry road. Please ensure you discuss this at the pre-trip meeting.
8AM – 10AM: Travel to the trailhead and complete vehicle shuttle.
10AM – 2PM: Hike to your camping location. Your first day is a bit more relaxing and you will have time to explore around the lake. It is a beautiful spot and you will be happy to have the extra time to explore.
Distance: 5.5 km
Elevation: 405 m+, 50 m-

Day 2
7AM: Wake up to crisp mountain air and the quiet stillness of the alpine. Pack down your tent and get ready for another beautiful day outside.
8AM – 10AM: Enjoy breakfast and finish packing up.
10AM – 3PM: Hike onward to your next camp, nestled beneath towering peaks that rise dramatically all around you. As the landscape opens up, take your time, this is a place meant to be savored, not rushed. Wander across ancient rockslides, stepping carefully over sun-warmed stone and listening to the quiet whispers of wind moving through the valley. Meander without agenda, tracing the curves of the terrain, and discovering small alpine details like wildflowers tucked between rocks and the shifting light on the mountainsides.
This stretch of the journey is about slowing down. Exploring gently. Letting curiosity lead the way while the vastness of the mountains invites you to simply breathe, wander, and be.
Distance: 7 km
Elevation: 300 m+, 350 m-

Day 3
7AM: Wake up to crisp mountain air and the quiet stillness of the alpine. Pack down your tent and get ready for another beautiful day outside.
8AM – 10AM: Enjoy breakfast and finish packing up.
10AM – 4PM: Today is the the biggest and most rewarding day of the journey. You’ll climb steadily toward a breathtaking mountain pass, weaving your way through ancient, time-carved peaks that feel both powerful and humbling. With every step upward, the world begins to change. Forest thins to krummholz, then gives way to open alpine slopes. The air grows cooler and crisper. Rock replaces soil. Views stretch farther. Take time to notice the subtle transitions of shifting plant life, changing textures in the stone, the way the light sharpens as you gain elevation. Pause often. Turn around. Watch the valley fall away behind you. At the pass, the reward is immense: sweeping views, wild silence, and the unmistakable feeling of standing high in the mountains, fully immersed in their ancient landscape. Then start your descent into camp for the evening.
Distance: 9.5 km
Elevation: 610 m+, 755 m-

Day 4
7AM: Wake up feeling content and ready to take on the day.
8AM – 10AM: Enjoy breakfast and finish packing up.
Take one last long look back at the peaks you crossed yesterday, a sweeping reminder of just how far you’ve come. The pass, the climb, the effort, viewed from this new perspective. Let that sense of accomplishment sink in. Today is softer. A day to reflect, to replay favorite moments, to laugh about the hard sections that already feel easier in hindsight. The trail eases beneath your feet, winding gently downward through familiar terrain. There’s more downhill than up — and yes, that deserves a celebratory whoop whoop. As you descend, the mountains slowly begin to loosen their hold. The air feels a little warmer, the trees a little taller, the sounds of the valley gradually returning. It’s a gradual re-entry back toward the real world.
