Overview

Welcome to the subalpine — that wild, untamed world just below the treeline where the forest begins to thin, the views explode open, and the air feels a little crisper with every step. It’s a landscape bursting with vibrant alpine flora, endless ridgelines, and the kind of scenery that makes you stop mid-stride just to take it all in. Your adventure kicks off with a twist: we ride in. Hop on a mountain bike and cruise along a rugged old backcountry road, winding deeper into the wilderness with every pedal stroke. It’s the perfect fast-paced start before the real immersion begins. At journey’s end, you’ll come face-to-face with a towering mountain streaked in rich ruby-red sedimentary rock, dramatically contrasted by brilliant patches of golden-yellow lichen clinging to the cliffs. It’s bold. It’s wild. It’s unforgettable.

September is a particular favorite. The hillsides glow with fall colors, and the golden larches begin to turn, painting the landscape in brilliant shades of amber. It’s a short season, but an unforgettable one — and you’ll have a front-row seat.

This backpacking trip is designed for an advanced backpacker and not a lot of extra time in camp.

⭐ Single-track hiking trails away from the crowds
⭐ Expert knowledge from our locals guides

Itinerary

Total Trip Stats:

Distance: 28 km, 1,039 m +/- elevation

Tentative Trip Itinerary:

This trip goes in and out on the same trail.

Day 1

8AM: Meet in Beaver Mines at the designated location discussed during the pre-trip meeting. A high clearance vehicle is recommended to reach the trailhead. If you don’t have one, you will likely be able to jump in a vehicle with someone else before we reach the difficult section of the backcountry road. Please ensure you discuss this at the pre-trip meeting.

8AM – 9AM: Travel to the trailhead.

9AM – 11AM: Bike along an old gravel road. Sections of the road are washed out from previous floods and we will walk our bike through these sections. Most of the road is quite easy and fun. We will stick together though. Once we get to the spot where we will start hiking, we will lock our bikes up to return to them the next day.

11AM - 4PM
: After we drop our bikes, we will then cross a shallow river. On the other side, we will likely have our lunch and then start our hike to the alpine lake where we will camp.

Your reward? A stunning alpine lake tucked beneath dramatic mountain headwalls — a hidden gem that feels worlds away from civilization.

As evening settles over camp, the mountains come alive in a blaze of alpenglow. Golden light pours across the cliffs, shifting to warm pinks and fiery reds in a show that feels almost unreal. Spend the evening unwinding by the lakeshore, sharing stories around camp, or cozying up in your tent beneath the vast mountain sky.

Day 2

7AM: Wake up. Take down your tent and pack your backpack.

Choose your own morning adventure:

  • Rise early to catch a breathtaking sunrise over the lake, or

  • Sleep in while your guide prepares a hearty breakfast and fresh coffee.

Take time to relax, soak in the scenery, and savor the last moments of wilderness before packing up camp.

8AM - 10AM: Breakfast and pack up camp.

10AM – 3PM: Hike and bike out the same way you hiked in. The bike out will be a nice reward for a fun weekend in the mountains. The trails will offer new views as we look towards the adjacent mountain valley.
