"The Intro to Backpacking Course was incredible – I was terrified to camp in the backcountry, but [the guide] taught me all of the basics and it was so fun!!! We laughed so much and I learned a ton. I felt such a sense of accomplishment after that trip and it really prepared me to continue to camp in the backcountry."
Overview
Ready to explore the backcountry and spend a night under the stars, but not sure where to begin? Uplift Adventures offers an Intro to Backpacking program designed to build your confidence and skills in the outdoors. You’ll learn how to plan and prepare for a backpacking trip, manage risks such as wildlife encounters and changing weather, and make sound decisions in remote environments.
These guided trips venture into wild areas with limited infrastructure, giving you an authentic backcountry experience in a supportive, instructional setting. We currently have two locations we go to (1) The Dimples and (2) The Cirque, which are both near Crowsnest Pass. Details are listed below with distance and elevation gain and loss.
All courses include a pre-trip meeting to discuss logistics one week before your trip (Thursday evening) and an instructional session Friday evening in Crowsnest Pass. You will then head out on Saturday morning for either 2 or 3 days. New to 2026, we are offering two styles of The Intro to Backpacking course (1) 2 days or (2) 3 days where you will also learn navigation skills. The 3 day option is only available at The Cirque location.
This program is ideal for beginners who have some day hiking experience or anyone who wants to learn more about safety and planning for the backcountry. We recommend completing a few day hikes with elevation gain prior to the course to ensure you’re prepared and ready to get the most out of your adventure.

Tentative Trip Itinerary:
One week (Thursday evening) before your trip, we will have a pre-trip meeting online to discuss logistics.
Day 0
6:30 - 8:30PM: Discuss risk management in the mountains. The specific location in Crowsnest Pass will be discussed at the pre-trip meeting.
Day 1
8AM: Meet in Crowsnest Pass at a designated location decided the night before. Convoy to the trailhead.
8AM – 9AM: Travel to trailhead.
- Driving time for The Dimples is approximately 20 minutes with some gravel road travel.
- Driving time for The Cirque is just over an hour on backcountry roads. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended for this drive. Please discuss at the pre-trip meeting if you'd like to carpool with someone.
9AM – 4PM: Adventure time. We’ll move at a supportive pace and take plenty of breaks along the way to rest, refuel, and enjoy the surroundings as we make our way to camp.
At the campsite, you’ll gain hands-on experience setting up a safe and efficient backcountry camp. This includes learning proper bear safety practices, food storage techniques, and how to establish a responsible latrine site following Leave No Trace principles.
4PM: Approximate time we will arrive at camp. Once camp is set, you’ll have time to explore the area, relax, meditate, or dive into a good book before we come back together to prepare and enjoy dinner as a group.

8AM - 9AM: Breakfast and pack up camp.
